Experience So Far!
I have been studying this course now approximately just over three months or so, from the first day I started I have loved every minute of it. My first ever blog I wrote that I loved SFX the most but I wasn't sure how good at it I was & I wasn't really confident in the area. I can create better outcomes now & I don't worry too much about it now. You can only get better I suppose. I love all my classes & enjoy the creativity involved. I am glad I chose James Watt to study this subject as they have a brilliant course outline. I don't really have much more to say other than I have enjoyed learning everything over the past few months & aim to stick in, make sure I am up to date with all my assessments, practice & continue researching various areas at home.
Curriculum of Excellence
This curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need in order to achieve in life, education, work, the present and in the future.
The purpose of the curriculum is encapsulated in the four capacities; to enable each child or young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an effective contributor.
At college we participate in the Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) which helps us become better learners and can contribute towards a better future. It identifies four purposes that enables young people to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
All of my current subjects in my course are in some aspect linked to the Curriculum of Excellence.
Special Effects & Character Makeup
In this class it is important to be creative and have the determination to achieve the highest level of work. Confidence & motivation is also important as you have to believe in yourself in order to use your abilities to the highest potential, & afterwards, be proud of your work.
Hairdressing
It is most important in this class to be a successful learner as we could potentially injure someone if we do not understand something properly & are not familiar with the correct procedure. We must have the confidence in order to communicate with people whether it be clients or class mates. It is equally important to be responsible when working with chemicals & electrical equipment as health & safety procedures must be followed. Must also be respectful of clients needs & requirements.
Wig Making
Successful learning is required in order to pass the class, must have the self motivation to ensure you work to the best of your ability to produce the best product outcome.
Overall, all of my classes this year combined with the Curriculum for Excellence can help me progress to become an effective contributor by gathering the skills needed in order to acquire a successful job in the future, as well as building confidence along the way.

Halloween Makeup
First I am going to start off with my favorite Halloween look which is the Silent Hill Nurse.
I have always loved the Silent Hill nurse & it is this look that has always attracted me to SFX. This overall character appearance looks quite hard to achieve, but a basic copy of this can be achieved quite easily if the right materials are used & you find a good outfit to complete the character.
I would start by wrapping bandages around the face, first I would soak them in tea to give them an older, worn appearance. I would then wrap them around the face, leaving small spaces for the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. I would use a small brush & a purple bodypaint colour for the skin, I would create a dark vein effect all over the visible skin areas; legs, arms and chest & neck area.
For the outfit, I would use an old dress similar to the one pictured in the above photo & also stain that with tea, same with the hat, this creates an older and more worn look by giving it a stained & yellowing appearance. To complete the look I would add white tights or stockings, white flat shoes & add some blood to the outfit & skin.
Freddy Krueger
Freddy Krueger is one of the most iconic horror characters in film history. When I think of Halloween characters, I always think of Freddy Krueger.
I would use latex & tissue paper to create the texture, building up layers step by step. I would then use a neutral coloured foundation to achieve the skin tone. Once the correct colour & texture has been achieved I would start removing small pieces in various sections of the face, I would then colour these sections with a pink/red colour to achieve the effect shown in the picture included.
Zombie
I am a huge fan of zombie movies! Or anything with zombies for that matter!
Zombie Makeup is what initially interested me in the SFX side of makeup.
The first thing I would do would be to apply a prosthetic piece to the mouth area, this can be used to cover over the original jawline therefore distorting the face to create the impression of the mouth & jaw area being ripped open. I would then start working on the colour & the texture of the face starting from the mouth area, blending in the prosthetic piece. Once the base has been achieved, I would start adding more detail. I would use a fine brush to add the more intricate detail for example, the purple veins all over the face, the dark areas around the eyes. Once this had been achieved, I would ensure all areas of the face had been covered & blended in properly. Once I was happy with the outcome so far, I would start adding the final touches, adding blood to the face focusing on the mouth area coming down the neck. I would then add fake contact lenses or blood capsules can be used to create the red eye effect. Fake teeth can be placed over the natural teeth if necessary, they can then be stained & covered in blood.
Final Outcome Achieved!

Skin Conditions
Acne Cosmetica
Makeup products can trigger acne or make existing acne worse, then we decide to try and disguise our skin blemishes by using even more makeup. This can lead to a condition called 'Acne Cosmetica'.
Acne Cosmetica is a mild but persistent form of acne. As the name implies, Acne Cosmetica is triggered by the use of cosmetics. It can occur anywhere on the body but is commonly found on the face, neck and hairline. Acne Cosmetica appears as small bumps across the skin surface. The skin will look and feel rough, many comedones and possibly some small papules and pustules will be present.
When a cosmetic product accumulates, excess skin oil builds up, the pore becomes blocked creating a blemish. This type of Acne can be caused by the use of comodogenic skincare products, heavy moisturisers, eye creams and makeup.
In order to improve the skin condition, it is important to identify what is causing the breakout. Are you breaking out on the forehead, hairline or scalp? Your hair care products may be to blame. Finding small bumps and whiteheads in the eye area or on the upper cheeks? Your eye cream could be to heavy. Breakouts over the entire face and neck area are most likely caused by moisturiser or foundation. Once the source of the breakouts is identified and use is discontinued, acne cosmetica gradually improves. You can still reduce the amount of pore blockages produced by only choosing products labeled noncomodogenic. Switch to an oil-free moisturiser and make sure to thoroughly cleanse all traces of makeup before bedtime.

Fantasy Movie Makeup
Alice in Wonderland
Queen of Hearts
I love this character makeup as it is very bold & vibrant, I love the contrast between colours and how this creates an overall eccentric looking character. I would start by using white facepaint, cover the whole face to the hairline, then use an aqua blue to create the eye makeup, ensure to cover the original brows and take the colour a couple of centimetres above the original brow. Here I would create a false thin, curved brow. I would then add a false beauty spot to the left cheekbone, this could be done by either using black facepaint or an eyeliner pencil, both would work. Then, onto the lips, simply create a perfect red heart in the centre of the lips. Finally, to complete the look I would add black mascara to both the upper & lower lashes.
When I think of Fantasy Makeup I always think of Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland
Mad Hatter
I would start off with using either white aquacolour or supracolour for the base makeup, cover the complete face, I would then move up and start with the eyemakeup. I would use an aqua blue on the upper eyelids and take it up to the brow and then use a bright pink under the eye bringing it down just above the cheekbone. I would also use the pink on either side of the nose. I would use a white mascara for the eyes and cover both upper and lower lashes. To complete the eyes I would use artificial hair pieces for the eyebrows. For the cheekbones I would simply use a rose coloured blusher, add to the area under the cheekbone and bring it down on both sides. To finish the look I would use a pink lipstick for the lips.

The Dark Knight
The Joker

The Joker always stands out for me when I think of fantasy makeup in films, I like the fact that there isn't much involved in the process of creating the makeup but nevertheless it never fails to make an impression. This makeup in my own opinion is pretty easy to achieve, either way you would use a basic white either supracolour or aquacolour for the base coat, remember to cover the eyebrows as The Jokers are not visible, then use black around the eyes covering the brow bone, smudge underneath. For the lips use a basic bright red colour, fully cover the lips and then bring up each side of the mouth, a prosthetic can be used underneath for the scar effect, once complete we have the famous joker smile. For a more worn effect pictured above, all areas of the makeup can be smudged.
